Tembotrione is a triketone corn field herbicide developed by Bayer in 2007. Since its launch, global sales have generally maintained rapid growth. At present, Tembotrione still shows a good development trend and ranks at the forefront of the corn herbicide market.

In 2009, sales of Tembotrione were approximately $30 million and reached $245 million in 2019, with a compound annual growth rate of 23.4%, including a compound annual growth rate of 51.6% from 2009 to 2014, which is much higher than all other HPPD inhibitor herbicides.
According to calculations, it is expected that the sales scale of Tembotrione will reach US$336 million by 2025, with a market capacity of approximately 4,000 tons.

Among the currently common corn field herbicides, Atrazine has been gradually withdrawn from the market. The activity of Tembotrione is higher than that of Sulfotrione and Mesotrione. It has the characteristics of broad herbicidal spectrum, long weeding period and high safety. At the same time, Some studies have found that compounding Tembotrione with Atrazine or Terbutylamine can improve the control effect on weeds such as crabgrass and setaria, and help delay the development of weed resistance. It is an effective substitute or supplement to the existing herbicide products in corn fields

Tembotrione can be used not only for ordinary corn, but also for almost all corn varieties such as Denghai series corn, waxy corn, and feed corn. It can be used in the mid-to-late post-emergence period of corn fields and can be used to control gramineous weeds such as crabgrass and setaria, as well as amaranth, pigweed, mustard, morning glory, nettle and other broad-leaf weeds, it has good effects on a variety of malignant weeds and resistant weeds, and can also be used in sunflowers, non-crop fields, etc.

Tembotrione has expired from China’s patent period in October 2019 and is a relatively young HPPD inhibitor herbicide. In 2023, Tembotrione ushered in a spurt of registration in China. Currently, a total of 28 Tembotrione products are registered in China, including 8 TC, 19 single-dose registrations and 1 mixed formulation.
