Among the HPPD inhibitor herbicides, which products have stronger market power? - Part 1



HPPD inhibitor herbicides have become one of the active research and development directions of new herbicides. The new generation of HPPD inhibitors also meet the needs of growers from the perspective of resistant weed management. HPPD inhibitor herbicides have a history of more than 40 years. There are three main structural types, namely triketones, pyrazolones, and isoxazolones, with triketones and pyrazolones being the most common. Based on application, HPPD inhibitor herbicides are mainly used for weed control in crops such as corn, rice, cereals, and sugarcane.

Corn/Maize field

Corn fields are currently the number one application market for HPPD inhibitor herbicides in China.

The stem and leaf spray herbicides include Mesotrione, Topramezone & Tembotrione. The main targets are grasses - foxtail grass, barnyard grass, crabgrass, reeds, etc., broadleaf weeds - gray weed, ramie, amaranth, amaranth, etc., sedge - cyperus, etc.

Mesotrione 

As an HPPD herbicide, mesotrione was first used in China. Syngenta began to promote mesotrione in China around 2004. At that time, paraquat and nicosulfuron were the mainstream herbicides for corn fields. However, given that mesotrione is highly effective against barnyardgrass and broadleaf weeds in Northeast China and safe for corn, it has gradually been accepted by everyone and has now become a basic agent for corn fields on par with nicosulfuron.

Topramezone 

Topramezone has a broad spectrum of weed control and high activity, and is particularly effective against Setaria weeds, especially red-root Setaria. It has gradually become a hot spot in the cornfield herbicide market. Topramezone technical price is high, but with the improvement of domestic technology level and the reduction of production cost, it is expected to become the mainstream agent for controlling weeds in cornfields.

Tembotrione

Tembotrione is more active than Mesotrione against grass weeds, especially against some barnyard grass and crabgrass. It has gradually been accepted by the market in the past four years.

Soil sealing herbicides are mainly Isoxaflutole .

Isoxaflutole 

Isoxaflutole has the effects of water activation and secondary sealing, and also has blocking activity. It can be used in soil sealing and before the 3-leaf stage of corn.

HPPD inhibitor herbicides were first used in a simple mixed with Atrazine, and then China independently developed the classic formulation of Mesotrione + Atrazine + Nicosulfuron. It not only expands the weed control spectrum, but also takes into account rapidity and thoroughness. In 2022, Xinda Co., Ltd. developed a new formulation of Mesotrione + Atrazine + Topramezone, which has better effects. It is not difficult to see that according to the changes in weeds in the market, the compound formula of HPPD inhibitor herbicides is also constantly changing, developing and successfully applied.
